Defend Against Propaganda – Tools to Navigate the Information Age

In today’s world, we’re flooded with information from every corner—social media, news channels, blogs, podcasts. But how do we know what’s true and what’s not? Misinformation is rampant, and the ability to discern real facts from misleading or outright false information has never been more critical. That's why I created the series Defend Against Propaganda—a short but powerful guide aimed at helping people navigate this overwhelming landscape.

Having spent seven years working in various newsrooms, I learned firsthand how information is presented, filtered, and sometimes distorted. Whether it was breaking news or in-depth investigative pieces, I was always struck by how crucial it was to separate facts from noise. This wasn’t just about uncovering the truth but also understanding how narratives are shaped—sometimes by agenda, bias, or simple human error. These years of experience sharpened my ability to recognize the subtle (and not-so-subtle) tactics used to sway public opinion.

What Defend Against Propaganda Offers

The series is designed to help people build essential tools for raising awareness during this age of mass information. With so much content flooding our screens, it's easy to get lost or, worse, manipulated. My goal with this series is simple: to empower you to weed through the clutter and find the truth.

Here’s how Defend Against Propaganda helps you:

Spotting Misinformation: One of the key elements of the series is teaching viewers how to spot misinformation at a glance. I cover how to recognize red flags, such as sensationalist language, lack of credible sources, and cherry-picked data. After working in newsrooms where accuracy was paramount, I know how important it is to look beyond a catchy headline. Watch media from different countries or regions that are not near you, you will get a completely different "view." Chat online with friends in different parts of the world and ask questions about what they are experiencing or what information they are being given.

Understanding Bias: Every media outlet has its slant—whether intentional or not. In the series, I explain how to detect bias and take it into account when consuming information. My experience behind the scenes gave me insight into how stories are framed, often shaping the way we perceive them. Once you understand how bias

works, you’re less likely to fall prey to one-sided narratives.

Critical Thinking and Fact-Checking: One of the biggest takeaways from my newsroom days was the importance of critical thinking and fact-checking. In Defend Against Propaganda, I provide practical tools to verify information, cross-check sources, and question what you’re being told. It’s easy to take things at face value, but real truth-seekers know the importance of digging deeper.

Deconstructing Propaganda Tactics: Propaganda isn't just a relic of the past. It’s alive and well today, and its tactics are often subtle. I break down how modern-day propaganda works—from emotional manipulation to the spread of fear and confusion. Understanding these techniques helps you remain grounded and level-headed, even when faced with information designed to provoke a knee-jerk reaction.

Follow the money flow: Look to see if the show has sponsors or who the executive producers are. Then, look at those sponsors AND producers, how are they funded? What organizations endorse them? You can learn a lot about agendas by following how the information was paid for.

Why This Series Matters Now

We live in a time when information is more accessible than ever before, but with that comes an increased risk of disinformation. From social media posts to mainstream news outlets, we’re bombarded with conflicting narratives. Now, more than ever, it’s essential to develop the skills to question, verify, and think critically.

My experience working in newsrooms gave me a front-row seat to the complexities of the information landscape. It taught me how easily facts can be twisted or obscured, and it’s this knowledge that I want to share with you through Defend Against Propaganda.

Whether you’re someone who wants to become more media literate or simply feel more confident navigating daily news, this series offers valuable insights that can help you make sense of it all. Armed with the tools to identify misinformation and propaganda, you’ll be better equipped to stay informed without falling victim to manipulation.

So, join me in this journey toward truth. Together, we can learn to defend against the ever-present flood of misinformation and ensure that we stay vigilant in our search for reality.
